Simon’s Ledger 2

Plans for the Glimjack Crew

– Shared Hollow: In progress
Mizuko offered her own Hollow, which we’re expanding.  Figuring out what we need, what we want, and what we can actually do has been interesting (and by “interesting,” I mean “made me want to tear out my hair sometimes.”)  We’re going to have enough space for everybody, and for Rover’s room full of junk and tools.  It’s going to be pretty primative, at least for now.  We just don’t have time to try to dig a septic system or go hunting for useful tokens that would make it more homey.  But we’re building in a way so that we can expand for those kinds of things as we go.

Mostly, right now everybody else is worried about security.  I suppose I agree, but I’m not going to enjoy sleeping there until I have time to put in a real bed, real running water, and real air-conditioning.

– A Plan for the Future:
Rover brought this up when we first got together.  It was an important thing to talk about at an inopportune time.  But now we seriously need to get together and discuss what each of us wants from the group.  Then we need to figure out how to get it.

What I’ve picked up so far-
– Mizuko is here to reconnect to her human side, and to learn to be a diplomat.  She has a long way to go.  Whatever shared life we build should involve Mizuko getting to socialize with people and get into relationships that aren’t based on power, fear, or violence.

– Less probably stands to benefit most if we help him with intelligence-gathering.  So we probably don’t want to build a really insular group.  It’d be better if we were out in the community, and even reaching out beyond the Duchy.

– Rover wants to build a business.  I kinda wish I’d been able to provide his initial bankroll.  He doesn’t seem to have a crusader mentality, but he’s a stand-up guy.  He’ll do the right thing when it matters.

– Rey is really hard to pin down.  Sometimes she gives me the vibe that she doesn’t want to be here at all.  But she took a job managing a casino, and I hear about her on the streets once in a while.  She’s making connections and building influence with some unsavory people.  So I think she is here to stay, and I wonder how I could help her out without endangering the Emerald Court.

That’s the big downside of my new job.  Sure, I have money and power, but it comes with responsibilities that crop up in odd ways.

But if I stay in the background and don’t do anything that involves money or actual criminal activity, I can probably still make myself useful.  It’s touchy enough that I’ll wait for her to ask.  Probably more polite that way anyway.

– And then there’s me.  I think I’d stay with the group just for regular sex with Mizuko.  But seriously, for the other things I’m going to want to do, I’ll need backup.  I don’t like violence, but violence happens whether I like it or not, and having your friends to back you up is always good.

I also want to do good things.  Our first meeting showed me that there’s always going to be fires to put out, but beyond that I’d like to really build something of value within the Duchy.  So I’m hoping our Motley can be turned to that end.

And if I get rich and powerful in the process, so much the better.

So I think I have a proposal.  We each have individual interests, and we probably have shared interests.  So we form ourselves into something that partakes of the nature of a cirlce of Knights and a modern investment firm in which we’re all partners.  We’ll take on tasks for ourselves to improve each member’s position, and we’ll be available to take on projects for other parties in return for some mutually agreeable reward.  Primarily, I’d like to be working for the Courts as freelance troubleshooters.  When direct action from one of the Courts would be difficult, the Glymjacks can act instead, with more of an aura of neutrality.

I’m hoping that will start to bridge the rift between Autumn and Summer/Spring.  I know how the rift formed, and it was just about unavoidable, but it needs to be fixed.  My impression is that nobody in the Rose Council is particularly attached to the idea of kicking Autumn while it’s down, but they’re not going to hold out the olive branch, either.  So if I want to avoid a bloodbath somewhere down the line, I’ll have to be sneaky.  If I can make friends high enough on the social ladder with Autumn, I can position myself to be an envoy between Autumn and Spring.

If I can also do something to bring in a Winter monarch, and keep him from being immediately polarized, the entire Duchy will benefit.

So, no pressure or anything.

  1. One note — I don’t see the kinds of connections Simon would need to know that Rey is making any kind of connection with “unsavory” people. And if he did have them, he’d have to look hard.

So, scratch that about Rey. He knows she manages a casino because that part isn’t secret. The rest is.
