Emmeline had heard that Renee had arrived briefly in Uzec before immediately leaving for home once it was heard her parent’s manor had been attacked. A week passed and she arrived in Uzec, family-in-tow. With the Baroness still in Derrien dealing with the aftermath, the seneschal sent the young woman to Emmeline while her family was given quarters.”
Renee bowed as she entered, “My lady.”
Em waved aside formality and closed to give Renee a hug. “I’m so sorry your family was targeted, Renee. Are they well?”
“Yes. They came with me from a time until the repairs are complete. I should tell you that they were looking for father and any other person who was on Hugo and Skall’s list. I heard you were able to get warning to Lord Roland.” she said.
She nodded. “Sending spell by Elemix was the fastest way. I think the warning was enough to save him and also Lord Arles.”
“Good. Good. I have heard from father just yesterday via the magus Brennic. He was not attacked, but as he was on the march that makes sense. That said, my training will be continuous, but the Guild, specifically Magus Alix and Magus Vanewe requested I come here.” She paused a bit and then said, “Honestly thirteen weeks of training is a lot of work, but I’m officially a non-active Chasseur in the Legion.” She had a bit of pride there. “That’s old Eterian for a hunter or scout. As a member of the Companion Guard, I’m a scout, guardian, and technically a Guild member – or so I’m told. I’m to guard you until after your pregnancy at least and escort you to the Vale beforehand when you are ready.”
“It’s a relief to have you here, Renee. Your eyes are unmatched anywhere. If they reassign you later, I’ll be disappointed. But I also know that in the future I will have to face things that perhaps you are not meant to have to experience.
“I’m speaking with the Margrave relatively often now. I’ll be sure to ask about your father, too. I’m concerned that so many of these assassins got away. Hugo is dead and gone but too many of his accomplices live free. We’ll all need to be careful.”
“Well, I’m a Free Companion, not a member of the House Guard. Trained and recognized, but not really paid or obligated beyond normal Guild requests where I do get paid. Like father was with Vorn back in the day – albeit briefly. So I can be here for awhile, but my obligation is to the North, or so I’m told. I haven’t had my meeting with my boss yet.” Renee said.
“Who is your boss?”
